Hey all, this is the article that was sent to NHQ for the upcoming SJAB Newsletter. I'll try to get some copies for our keeping.

Canberra Adventure Trip to Endau Rompin 27 – 29 May 2006

A total of 27 cadets, 4 parents, 4 teachers and officers made our first trip out of Singapore on the 27 May 2007 to Endau Rompin in West Malaysia. We arrived at the Nature Education and Research Center (NERC), situated in the heart of the forest, around 2pm after hours of traveling through uneven tracks.

A 148 million year old rainforest, Endau Rompin National Park was situated 60 kilometers from Kahang in Johor state. It encompasses the rivers Endau in Johor and Rompin in Pahang and covers about 488 sq. kilometers. There are many endangered species such as the Malaya Tiger, Asia Elephants and etc. that still roams the National Park today.

Our first day was spent in the NERC learning about plants, insects, birds, fishes, reptiles, swimming in the Endua River and a night trek in the forest behind our dormitory. More adventures await us on the second day of the trip. We took a ride on the boat to Kuala Jasin, trek to Kuala Marong and to Upeh Guling Waterfalls. The rain did not dampened our mood although we were all drenched from head to toes; let’s not forget about the leeches which accompanied us throughout the whole trekking experience.

The most memorable for all would be the crossing of the river where the current was strong enough the swept most of us away. However, with our courage and confident, we managed to conquer the strong river current and got to the river bank on the opposite, of course with the help and encouragement from each other. Most of us choose to raft back to NERC in the evening despite a tiring day.

We shared our experience of the trek with each other before we visited the Visitor Center and the Orang Asli village (Kampong Peta) on the last day of the trip. The Orange Asli is the natives of the National Park and has a rich aborigine’s culture. We were shown their daily lifestyle and some of their hunting skills.

The whole trip was memorable, exciting and experiencing. We were back to basic during the two nights stay at NERC where we got to dine and bathe in total darkness, an experience we never have in Singapore. The most important of all, we have foster better teamwork and friendship among us and a better understanding of our corps’s values; “Courage, Confident, Commitment”.

Lastly, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the teachers for organizing this trip, parents who have given us tremendous support and of course, not to forget the guides who have tolerated our “nonsense” throughout the trip.

We have survived it! Well Done Canberrans!
